It’s been 19 years since the iconic film The Devil Wears Prada hit our screens and fans have been demanding a sequel ever since.
While there has been talks of a follow-up for years, we finally know more about what we can expect from the next instalment – and fans have been shocked to discover it could include the death of a beloved character.
More on that in a sec, but first let’s quickly recap on what we know about the The Devil Wears Prada sequel.

Who is starring in The Devil Wears Prada sequel?
The original film was based on Lauren Weisberger’s (who worked as a personal assistant for former American Vogue editor Anna Wintour) 2003 novel, which told the story of a woman’s nightmare experience working at a fashion magazine.
Anne, who played Andy Sachs, the naive and inexperienced assistant at Runway who quit at the end of the first movie, is back.
Meryl Streep is also reprising her role as Miranda, the high-powered magazine editor from hell.
For the movie, she earned a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy and an Academy Award nomination.

Emily Blunt, who previously said she would be keen to take part if “everyone did it”, is also returning as the snooty assistant Emily Charlton.
Colin from Accounts, writer and star Patrick Brammall is joining the sequel, and while his role is being kept under wraps, some reports suggest that he will play Anne Hathaway’s love interest.
Rachel Bloom, who is known for her work in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, has also joined the cast.
Charlies Angels star Lucy Liu, Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, BJ Novak from The Office, Pauline Chalamet, Conrad Ricamora, Helen J. Shen, and comedian and podcaster Caleb Hearon have also been confirmed as new additions.
Earlier in July, Kenneth Branagh was added to the sequel, where he will play Miranda Priestley’s husband.

David Frankel and Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote and directed the first film, are also returning. Tracie Thoms, who played Andy’s best friend Lily, and Tibor Feldman, who was the chairman of Runway’s parent company, are also coming back for the sequel.
Deadline has also reported that Wendy Finerman, who produced the 2006 film, is also set to come back.
When the original film was released 19 years ago, it became a box office smash, earning US$326.7 million worldwide.

Has filming begun for The Devil Wears Prada sequel?
The hype about the new movie became very real when 20th Century Studios released a teaser on July 1, with some of the film’s most iconic lines, revealing that the follow-up is now in production.
The teaser, which was uploaded to Instagram, had Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci tagged, and the pair have been spotted filming the sequel in New York.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, more scenes were filmed in Italy.
But it’s new photos that have emerged of Anne and Stanley’s characters attending a funeral that have really sent the rumour mill into overdrive, suggesting the new film could give fans a major twist.
The snaps showed Anne as Andy dressed fully in black, leaning close to Stanley’s character Nigel at a funeral scene.
Whose funeral? Could it be Meryl Streep’s Miranda?

What is The Devil Wears Prada sequel about?
We don’t know yet – as plot details remain a closely guarded secret – although it’s thought the story will follow Miranda as the editor struggles to remain relevant in the face of the print magazine’s ongoing decline and the rise of digital readership.
At the same time, she “faces off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs.”
Some fans have expressed distress online at the emergence of “spoiler” photos, which they say ruins the anticipation of going to see the film.

Henrik Lischke, senior fashion features editor at Grazia, told The Guardian that he would like cinema viewers to experience an element of surprise.
“[The Devil Wears Prada 2 team] will have to get more creative with the scenes that they don’t film out in the open so certain elements of surprises remain,” he told the publication, naming Gia Coppola’s film The Last Showgirl as a good example of when this worked because of a plotline that wasn’t in the trailer.
“You were surprised by something entirely new,” he said. “I hope that The Devil Wears Prada 2 is like that – that there are plot twists and outfits we haven’t seen.”
Whatever the ultimate storyline, Stanley Tucci is enamoured with his experience filming the franchise overall.
“I think we would have one of the best times ever… That experience was one of the greatest I’ve ever had,” Stanley told People in October 2024.
“I’ve made many movies, I’ve probably made close to 100 movies, and I don’t even know how many television episodes, but that experience was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had.”

Who isn’t returning for the Devil Wears Prada sequel?
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Adrian Grenier, who played Anne Hathaway’s character’s boyfriend, Nate, is not returning.
Since the film’s release, many have considered Nate to be a villain, so maybe lots of people are rejoicing with this news!

“All those memes that came out were shocking to me,” Adrian told Entertainment Weekly in 2021, in an oral history reunion with the cast and crew.
“It hadn’t occurred to me until I started to really think about it, and perhaps it was because I was as immature as Nate was at the time, and in many ways he’s very selfish and self-involved; it was all about him, he wasn’t extending himself to support Andy in her career.”

When is The Devil Wears Prada sequel being released?
The highly anticipated follow-up is set to be released in cinemas on May 1, 2026, which is the same day as the release of Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday.
